Winter is on its way, and before you know it, you’ll be pulling out your thick coats to stay warm as you go about your day-to-day life. But what if you don’t have the right type of coat needed to keep you comfortable in cold or wet weather?
If you are in need of a new coat or want to replace the one you have, store-bought items can be too expensive. Additionally, you won’t get to customize your piece the way you can when you make it yourself. In order to ensure your success with your DIY endeavor, we’ve compiled a few of our top tips when it comes to making a winter coat at home with your sewing machine.
Finding the perfect fabric for a winter coat can be tricky. It’s important that the fabric be the right thickness to keep you comfortable in cold weather but not be so bulky and heavy that it’s difficult to move around in.
Generally, wool blend fabrics tend to be the best at balancing warmth with wearability. Other great options include heavy cotton, corduroy, and moleskin; all of these fabrics come in a variety of colors to suit your preference.
For a great finished product, it’s important to cut your fabric on a bias so that the thick material you use for your coat will still have some stretch to it after it’s gone through your sewing machine.
Cut your coat’s body and sleeves with slightly more room inside than you think you need, and make sure to cut these pieces out separately and sew them together after the fact.
Linings made of fleece or wool are best for optimal warmth and comfort this winter. Make sure to sew the lining pieces together first with your sewing machine so that you can craft the outer layers around it. This will help to avoid accidentally making any of the layers too big or small.
If you live in a place where it rains or snows during the winter, you may want to add an additional layer of protective fabric on the outside of your coat. This layer should be sewn last.
