Keep Warm All Season: DIY Throw Blanket

As the colder months are approaching, you may find yourself reaching for a throw blanket at home much more often than you were before. Instead of pulling out the same blankets, you used last year, why not shake things up a bit by making your own to add to your collection?

Materials You’ll Need

This DIY throw blanket is easy to create with a sewing machine and a few other materials, including:

• 4.5 yd of flannel fabric
• Fabric scissors
• Thread
• Pins

Step-by-Step Instructions

Cut your 4.5 yd of fabric into two pieces, measuring 2.25 yd each. Place your fabric pieces together with the wrong sides out. Pin their edges while leaving room to sew the seams closed.

Trim any extra fabric pieces off the sides before turning it right side out. Make sure the corners are pushed out completely.

Topstitch around your blanket’s edges to create a finished look. Invert the seam that needs hemming and pin it.

Then, topstitch one more time to include the unfinished section. It should blend in seamlessly with the rest.

Make sure you grab some painter’s tape to help plan your design and properly mix your fabric paint (generally 1 part medium to 2 parts paint) before beginning.

Using a dry brush method to prevent leaking, gently apply the paint in between pieces of painter’s tape with a dabbing motion. For darker colors, you may want to apply two coats of your paint.
