A cozy beanie is a great fashion statement, but if you live in a place where the winters get particularly cold or even see snow, it can become a necessity. Luckily, this DIY fleece-lined beanie cap craft will make it easy to create your own beanie for optimal comfort and style!
To get started with this craft, you’ll need:
Jersey and fleece fabrics (for the outside and inside of the cap)
Sewing machine
Color-matched thread
Jersey needle
Fabric scissors
Beanie hat sewing pattern
Make sure to pre-wash your jersey fabric before beginning to avoid shrinking. Fleece does not need to be pre-washed.
With your materials gathered, it’s time to get started!
Following your sewing pattern, cut out the fabric pieces with your fabric scissors. Your jersey and fleece fabrics should be the same size. Fold the fabrics right sides together.
Pin the outer edges and stitch with your sewing machine using a 3/8 in seam allowance. Straight or zigzag stitches should work, and your jersey needle will help to avoid stretching. If you happen to have a stretch needle on hand, this will work even better to keep the fabric in its proper form during the sewing process.
Close the top of each fabric piece. Fold the jersey piece in half to make sure the seams are aligned, and then stitch the top edge closed.
Stuff the fleece fabric piece inside the jersey piece, outsides together. Align the back seams.
Sew along the bottom edge. Zigzag stitching is best for this part, as a straight stitch could limit the ability of the garment to stretch comfortably during wear.
Backstitch at your seam’s beginning and end, leaving an opening of 2 in.
Using the opening, turn the beanie right side out and sew the gap closed. It’s best to complete this step by hand with a needle and thread, as the width of the gap is slight and could easily be overshot with a sewing machine.
Now, you have a completed DIY fleece-lined beanie cap to keep you warm and cozy all winter long!
