When Did Labor Day Begin?

When the Industrial Revolution began in the 1800s, it was due to working 12-hour workdays, 7 days a week, and with working being as young as 5 or 6 years old. The protests and strikes became violent, and on September 5th, 1882, around 10,000 employees took the day, unpaid, to march in New York City. This is known as the first Labor Day parade in American history. 

Then, every first Monday in September was given as a day off in the industrial centers around the country. Congress passed legislation on the recognition of Labor Day 12 years later in 1894. Ever since then, the first Monday of every September is observed as a paid day of vacation.
